Arsene Wenger believes that German international Mesut Ozil is starting to develop the attribute of captaincy in his game.

Ozil arrived from Real Madrid for a club record £ 42 million. After struggling in his first full year at the club, he is starting to dominate games. Ozil is on course to creating a new record in terms of assists over a league campaign. The German already has a whopping 16 assists in the league with the season just past Christmas. If he continues on the same vein of form, Thierry Henry’s record of just over 20 assists in a league season will be broken quite comfortably.

Wenger, though, is not worried about Ozil breaking the records right now. He is extremely happy with the midfielder showing some captaincy element to his game. Arsenal have long been criticised for not having leaders within the team. When they last won the league in 2003-04 season, the club had many leaders like Patrick Vieira and Henry. Apart from helping the goal scorers, Wenger has also witnessed Ozil find the back of the net five times already this season. Adding more goals to his game will be an important priority for the player.

At 27 years of age, Ozil is at the peak of his career and can make a major impact.”When he was injured for a long period he worked very hard physically. He is a complete athlete.I also believe he has grown in stature and takes responsibilities, leadership in the team and on that front he has improved tremendously and looks determined to lead the team compared to when he arrived. I think he plays in a position that suits him well. He plays in a style of football that suits him well,” said the Frenchman ahead of the club’s next match against Newcastle.
