‘It sure is nice to be on the list,’ he grinned to Paris Foot. ‘I’m really happy, but later I must play. Then I must prove myself. Finally, I will try to stay.’ Capped 18 times, Saha, who is now 31 years old, has confessed that he is now more ‘suspicious’ and less willing to be carried on a wave of enthusiasm, as shown by his measured discussion.
Saha’s career has been plagued by injury, though he is finally enjoying a consistent run of first team football with the Toffees, and he is regularly a stand-out figure at Goodison Park. He has certainly done enough to catch French national coach Raymond Domenech’s eye, earning a shout for next week’s international friendly against Spain.
‘Before thinking about the national team, I mostly thought about playing again, because the pitch was missing,’ he considered. ‘All I want is to make it fun. I’m happy! But I went through so many tests and won’t get as carried away as in the past. Being there is still great!’
Saha last turned out for les Bleus in 2006, when they came up against Greece in the Stade de France. He was withdrawn at half-time to be replaced by Nicolas Anelka and is betting on getting a better chance next Wednesday.
